Start with the Campo
Make Piazza del Campo your first point of orientation. The fan-shaped square brings together the Palazzo Pubblico, the Torre del Mangia and the surrounding streets. Before choosing a café or museum, take a slow circuit and notice how the city meets the square. The regional tourism guide explains its principal landmarks.
This is an editorial day plan, not a timed walking tour. Put your arrival point and accommodation on a map first. If you have bags, arrange storage or check-in before beginning; a short distance on a map does not account for steps, slopes or luggage.
Choose one substantial visit
Continue toward the cathedral quarter and choose your main indoor visit. The Duomo complex and Santa Maria della Scala reward different interests: cathedral art and architecture for the former, the history and collections of the old hospital for the latter. Avoid making both compulsory on a short arrival day.

Leave an unbooked afternoon
Use the afternoon for the streets between your main visit and your evening plans. A good first day needs room for a shop, a second look at a façade or a longer lunch. Pick one extra stop only after checking how much energy and time remain.
If you want a tower view, check the official admission arrangements and consider the climb separately from the rest of the walk. Do not assume a combined museum ticket includes every viewpoint or guarantees immediate entry.
Adapt the plan
- Late arrival: make the Campo and dinner the whole plan; keep the main ticketed visit for tomorrow.
- Rain: choose a museum with confirmed opening and simplify the outdoor route.
- Limited walking: plan the route from the actual arrival point, asking the attraction about steps and accessible entrances.
- Palio period: check access changes before relying on a route through the Campo.
